Mark is going to Grade 2
June 27, 2007 by Wendy Cooper
Mark’s last day of school was today and his entire school went to Mayfair Pool for a day of food, fun, and swimming. His report card was good but not great which we will work a little bit on this summer. He is capable of doing better but it was a year of transition for him as well as for me and to be honest in the middle of my depression, I was not there for him like I should have been.
I never did any school work at all over the summer but Jordon “benefited” from a school strike in Calgary when he was in Grade 1 and spend a bit each day all summer doing a little work every day which he said made Grade 2 a lot easier (his grade one teacher was an alcoholic and his grade two teacher used racial slurs). We have some cue cards and am getting Mark some software to prepare him for Grade 2 to work on. We have some friends who home school who recommended that we check out the Teacher’s Trunk for some math workbooks. His school also offers a summer reading program that we will be taking him to.
Some other summer ”field trips” include the Western Development Museum, Fort Carlton, Saskatchewan Railway Museum and some of the museums and galleries on the University of Saskatchewan campus. Hopefully the work will make Grade 2 a little more enjoyable for him. If you have any other educational ideas that Mark might find interesting, let me know in the comments below.
