Well it is Saskatchewan’s first ever, “Alberta gets a holiday and we don’t so we better copy them day”. For short we call it Family Day. To celebrate Family Day, Mark ditched us for a sleepover at his friends, Jordon worked the graveyard shift at the Salvation Army and I worked at Safeway.
The only nice thing is that Canadian Idol is no longer at Market Mall although I think Jordon is secretly disappointed that I didn’t get him Canadian Idol judge Sass Jordan’s autograph (who from the photo only needs to see out of one eye).. All Saturday I had to deal with a store full of scantily clad girls with no talent and poorly fitting outfits singing badly while shopping for hair products. It was so sad that I now fear for the future of the Canadian music industry. We all thought it was Kazaa that was killing them, no, it is the fact that now every 17 year old girl thinks she can be Kelly Clarkson.Back to this Family Day thing. Since I work in retail, I get two holidays off a year, Christmas Day and Good Friday. Even Jordon worked Easter last year. The rest is just a bigger paycheck which I appreciate. If the Saskatchewan Government really wants a “family day” why not make it a mandatory store closure day like Christmas. Forget the overtime, just send everyone home with pay for a day. For Jordon it is different as he works in a 24 hour facility that has to be manned but he knew that before he signed up. Since when is retail so important that the world stops if it shuts down? Now I did volunteer today and I am not mad at being at work and neither is anyone else but I know a lot of people who are at work today who really don’t want to be.
Most of them are working retail and we all know what will happen if people can’t shop whever they want…. they may actually have to spend some time talking as a family. Then again, there is always TV.
