The neighborhood that we live in is a core neighborhood in Saskatoon. In other words it is old according to the City of Saskatoon website.
The Mayfair subdivision is one of the oldest in Saskatoon outside of the original three settlements of Nutana, Saskatoon and Riversdale. Part of the land originally granted to the Temperance Colonization Society in 1882, it was in private hands by the time Saskatoon was incorporated as a City in 1906 and was first identified on a map of Saskatoon in 1907, during the height of the city’s first real estate boom.
It is a poorer neighborhood but lately it has been going through a mini-revival, even in the winter. A couple weeks ago a new basement appeared across the street on a subdivided double lot and this morning the condemned house behind us came tumbling down and work is being done its replacement. While Ozzies is missed, we got lucky as it was replaced by Poverinos. J.D. Peppercorns is a wonderful place to dine and we actually got a great coffee shop in the neighborhood with Cafe Vivant. Slowly the neighborhood is changing and its a good thing, even if I miss some of the old.
