Yahoo! has a new music blog that looks really good. It is (kind of official). My question is why can I listen to Launchcast via Yahoo! Instant Messenger but not via Yahoo! Music Engine. My help request said it was because I was in Canada and because of licensing. It seems weird that I can listen to music in Canada via some forms of media but not others. Still, I like it better than iTunes.

It is weird.
The reason is that LAUNCHcast in Y! Music Engine is different. It actually plays from the MusicNet catalog of more than 2M songs rather than the LAUNCHcast catalog. It’s a complicated issue, but simply put it’s just that we’ve licensed many different catalogs, but we haven’t licensed the one that Y! Music Engine uses for Canada yet.
Dealing with the labels is a blast, particularly when it comes to physical boundaries that barely exist on the Internet.
The world is not (yet) flat when it comes to content licensing.
