Creepy old men, mean spirited women, and fair trade coffee
October 25, 2005 by Wendy Cooper
At my store I work at, every day is Senior’s Day. I am surrounded by senior complexes. 98% of seniors are nice, chatty, and pleasant. On Saturday, it was “sexually harass Wendy day”. No touching but a of really lewd inuendo. Obviously the pharmacy was running a deal on little blue pills.
Now it would be different if it was young guys doing it. It is a lot easier to kick or punch someone who is 20 years old and stupid but young guys don’t talk like that. They know better. They have been well trained by their mothers, teachers, sisters, and friends that you don’t talk about sexual things with a cashier who is just trying to ring through your chocolate ice cream bars. For some reason, some really old men were never taught to be politically correct and with age, have just become cruder. Like I said, the vast majority of senior citizens I deal with are gentlemen to the extreme but for some reason, some old men I deal with on a consistent basis are quite lewd.
Sunday was a different day. There was still some lewd men but a lot of angry people mad at me because they can’t do math or read signs. Point out that the store was correct and they were not just made them angrier. Since I was handling customer service on Sunday, I got yelled at, scowled at, and yelled at some more. One customer after yelling at me, three other cashiers, and two food clerks (and called them “little boys”), she then realized that she was completely and totally in the wrong, had taken up 30 minutes of my time, tried to laugh it all off. I wasn’t laughing. I was 30 minutes late getting home because of her. All of this was over $1. I wasn’t laughing considering I had a supper date with my guys. Luckily Jordon was really tired and instead of meeting me at Ozzies, decided to take a nap until I got home. By the time I was done ranting, it was just easier to curl up on the sofa and stay in.
Monday was nicer. We went for coffee at Starbucks where Jordon ordered their new fair trade Estima blend, ran into the Reimers and talked to them. Our fall has been nice enough that we were able to sit on the patio at Starbucks and savor the nice weather. The Reimers are off to Hawaii. It is a lot easier seeing friends go to Hawaii when it is nice here than it is to see people go in February when it is so cold that polar bears have replaced the school crossing guards and you are stuck trying to figure out how to get your tongue off that metal pole you just licked. After doing that, running some errands, we then came home for a nice supper. Since Jordon has been sick, cooking has been a challenge as he can’t stomach a lot of the food he really enjoys. While he realizes he used to really like a lot of the food we used to eat, he can’t even handle the smell of a lot of it anymore. Now as long as he doesn’t develop a tofu craving, he should be okay.
